Zoe Saldaña leads the trailer for Netflix's 'Emilia Pérez' about a transgender cartel boss
The Netflix trailer for Emilia Pérez depicts passion, secrets, and cartel criminality.
On September 30, Netflix released the official trailer for the musical, starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón.
According to Netflix's Tudum website, Emilia Pérez recounts the narrative of high-powered lawyer Rita (played by Saldaña) who takes on an unexpected task, enabling a Mexican cartel leader (portrayed by Gascón) to fake their death and undergo sex-reassignment surgeries.
That decision affects not only Rita and Emilia, but also Emilia's wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez).
“It was described to me as this film noir that didn’t really exist in any of the conventional kind of genres, but it was a musical,” Saldaña told Tudum. "It was a crime-themed opera, but there would be a sense of justice, validation, and sanctification. And I just said, 'What?' I had to read it more than once. "And then I couldn't stop thinking about it."
The teaser features Saldaña dancing atop a dinner table and Gomez displaying vulnerability among a mob of dancers.
The film also stars Adriana Paz as Epifanía and Edgar Ramírez as Gustavo.
Emilia Pérez, starring Gascón, Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz, has won several prizes at festivals, including the Cannes Jury Prize and joint Best Actress Prize. The film also got the Cannes Soundtrack Award, with music composed by Clément Ducol and Camille.
Selena Gomez makes her acting debut in a Spanish-language film.
Jacques Audiard directed the musical and co-wrote the scenario with Thomas Bidegain, Nicolas Livecchi, and Léa Mysius.
Emilia Pérez opens in select cinemas on November 1 and will be available for streaming on Netflix on November 13.
