Golf is used as a metaphor for life in Fairways to Happiness
by Kathia Woods
Doug Morrione directed the documentary "Fairways to Happiness," which examines the pursuit of happiness. The film follows Morrione as he moves from New York to Dubai, where he takes up golf and seeks happiness.
But what exactly is joy? Is it the short-term high or the long-term consequences of achieving a goal? Or is it simply a spiritual way of life?
This documentary features interviews with an eclectic group of people. Some are currently based in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates and are specialists in the fields of psychology and religion. Everyone talks about their own methods for finding happiness in their lives.
The Movie also has an interview with a Buddhist monk who offers some profound views on the subject.
It's not enough to wonder what makes for a happy existence; we need to examine the various elements that go into achieving that state of bliss. It factors in one's means of support, one's connections to others, and one's faith and spirituality. It also demonstrates the significant role that social media plays in shaping our perspectives.
It's easy to see why, after everything that's happened in the past two years, Doug wants to make this movie. One reason for this is the possibility that Dubai would establish the first government ministry for happiness anywhere in the world.
To facilitate the development of such an office and to ensure that residents of Dubai enjoy a high standard of living, the city has invested heavily in its physical surroundings.
The level of national productivity is highly correlated with the level of "happiness" in a country. They realize a robust economy can't exist without a robust mindset.
The city of Dubai is well depicted in this film. You can see what makes this city such a popular destination for visitors and locals alike through their tourism campaign, but that isn't why Doug chose to feature it.
The idea behind the film, also known as the experiment, is to understand that achieving happiness is a process that is not solely based on accomplishments.
Every day, as individuals, we are supposed to work towards achieving that peace and learning how to eliminate what does not.
Eugene, an avid golfer, is one of the participants who uses his golf score to achieve happiness. It's an intriguing point of view, given that golf is a difficult sport to master. Golf, for him, is a metaphor for life. Every day brings new challenges, but much like golf, one must find ways to persevere.
The film's challenge is to help the average viewer connect with the end result. After all, most people cannot afford to relocate to Dubai and play golf. Most are dealing with real-life problems, many of which are environmental or institutional in nature and cannot be overcome simply by changing one's mindset.
The film actually reinforces the notion that achieving "happiness" is a never-ending struggle. Finally, one must consider it a journey that may take decades for some.
"Fairway to Happiness" is an intriguing conversation piece, and the film encourages those who are at a crossroads to take steps toward a more peaceful state. It assists the viewer in narrowing down what is truly important to them in their daily lives.
