Erivo soars in Wicked

by Kathia Woods

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star as Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland, respectively, in the film adaptation of the Broadway hit "Wicked" Based on Gregory Maguire's bestselling novel, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," the story explores the origins of the iconic villain, revealing a complex character who wasn't always wicked. We will release the film adaptation in two parts.

Jon M. Chu, director of the acclaimed film "In the Heights," takes on the challenge of bringing the beloved story of "Wicked" to the big screen. The film begins with the iconic scene of the Wicked Witch's demise. Glinda, forced to recount Elphaba's past, reflects on their complex friendship and how it all began.Their story starts with an unexpected incident that throws their lives into disarray, forcing them to become roommates. The film explores the challenges and dynamics of their unlikely friendship as these two polar opposites navigate their differences.

One of Chu's most challenging tasks was adapting the beloved songs for the screen while preserving their original magic. The film seamlessly weaves these songs, deeply cherished by fans, with its comedic elements. The contrasting personalities of Glinda and Elphaba are a major source of humor. The portrayal of Glinda as self-absorbed and attention-seeking hilariously clashes with Elphaba, who, ostracized for her green skin, despises superficiality. This dynamic duo shines in the iconic number "Popular," where Grande displays both her vocal talent and comedic timing.A notable departure from the stage musical is the early revelation of The Wizard's true nature. The audience quickly realizes in this adaptation that Jeff Goldblum's portrayal of The Wizard is a charlatan, using special effects to deceive the people of Oz.

Michelle Yeoh, as Madam Morrible, brings a unique charm to the role, showcasing her manipulative side. However, her vocals may not be the strongest in a musical that demands exceptional vocal abilities. Cynthia Erivo's portrayal of Elphaba is undeniably captivating. Her performance is a perfect blend of sarcasm, humor, and vulnerability. Yet, it's her powerful vocals that truly distinguish her from the rest of the cast. Erivo effortlessly navigates the challenging vocal demands of the role, proving her position as one of the industry's top singers. Her rendition of the reimagined "Defying Gravity" is simply breathtaking. Erivo's ability to convey Elphaba's angst resonates deeply with the audience, making her the undeniable star of the production.

Wicked has all the potential to be a remarkable movie musical, but in its attempt to replicate some of the Broadway show's magic and appeal to moviegoers, it loses some of its charm.

Ariana Grande's portrayal of Glinda is not necessarily bad, but the role doesn't demand much from her given the similarities between her personality and the character's. Her strong vocals are most notable in scenes with Cynthia Erivo.

Overall, Wicked has the potential to be an outstanding movie musical. However, in attempting to recreate the magic of the Broadway show while appealing to a wider audience, it loses some of its charm.

The division of the film into two parts seems unnecessary, especially considering that Part One alone is longer than the entire stage musical, including intermission. The inclusion of certain subplots, like those involving Glinda's sidekicks, feels superfluous and detracts from the central relationship between the two main characters.

While the film boasts a talented cast, some actors seem underutilized. The exceptional Peter Dinklage's Doctor Dillamond role could have been more substantial, and Jonathan Bailey's Fiyero Tigelaar also feels somewhat underdeveloped. However, the film does offer a delightful surprise for fans of the original musical.

It's important to note that the film adaptation diverges from its stage counterpart, offering a distinct experience. Despite its flaws, Cynthia Erivo's outstanding performance as Elphaba is a highlight, bringing a captivating energy to the screen. Her portrayal is a testament to her deep understanding of the character and is, in itself, a compelling reason to see the film.

Wicked hits theaters this Friday worldwide.
