Tyrese has emotional Breakfast Club moment
Tyrese Gibson began his newest interview on The Breakfast Club with a smile, but the singer and actor later burst into tears.
The Transformers and Baby Boy star appeared on the morning radio show on Tuesday, August 20, to discuss his new film 1992 and music Beautiful Pain, both of which will be released on Friday, August 30.
Tyrese stated that the album was inspired by his acrimonious divorce from his second wife, Samantha Lee, in 2020.
"This album has helped me discover the beauty in my pain, that's why it's called Beautiful Pain," according to him.
Later in the interview, the topic shifted to 1992.
Tyrese created the thriller about a crime that takes place during the pandemonium of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The film also features Ray Liotta in one of his final roles before his death in May 2022.
"Ray passed away, and this is the last piece of art he left the world with," Tyrese explained in the interview.
Tyrese has been through a lot of sadness since his divorce, including the deaths of his mother, two sisters, Ray Liotta, filmmaker John Singleton, and Tyrese's Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker.
"Have you really taken the time to deal with all of that grief or are you just trying to stay busy to avoid it?" Charlamagne asked.
Tyrese then started crying.
"I'm doing the best I can with every 24 hours I get," he stated through tears. "Black men cry."
Tyrese, who declined a tissue to wipe away his emotions, spoke about the sadness he felt when his mother died in 2022.
"There is no square footage I could ever live in; there are no rims, jewels, or car. There is no net worth, press release, co-star, or collaboration in the world that could ever replace my mother," he said, adding, "that could ever fill the void of what it's like to wake up, get married, and want to be in something for the rest of your life, and it goes away."
The multi-hyphenate stated that the agony of his divorce had been terrible.
"When a divorce occurs, women are not the only ones who are saddened. When a miscarriage occurs, it is important to check on more than just women. When you can't put food on the table because your career goes up and down, stop contacting and ignoring the man in favor of checking on the lady," he said. "This is real s-t out here."
Tyrese addresses the grieving process in the video below, at 43:42.
