The Crow and Blink Twice Flop at the Box Office
This weekend, Blink Twice and The Crow made muted box office debuts.
Deadpool and Wolverine returned to the top of the charts, leaving the newbies in the dust. The Marvel superhero saga earned an estimated $18.3 million, raising its five-week domestic total to $577.2 million, Comscore announced Sunday.
Alien: Romulus, last week's top, dropped to second place with $16.2 million, while It Ends With Us finished third with $11.8 million.
Despite leading a wave of new releases, Blink Twice only earned $7.3 million, placing it in fourth place.
With an average of $2,388 per theater, Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut was shown in 3,067 places. The production and marketing costs of the picture were estimated to be $20 million.
Blink Twice is led by Channing Tatum, who plays tech billionaire Slater King and is engaged to Kravitz in real life. At a charity banquet, the strong businessman meets Frida, a cocktail waitress played by Naomi Ackie, and their relationship takes off. During one of his wild parties, Slater invites Frida to his private island. The situation quickly takes a dark turn, but she agrees to attend because she is seeking excitement.
Geena Davis, Adria Arjona, Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Haley Joel Osment, and Alia Shawkat are among the other cast members.
A "B-" CinemaScore was the audience's grade for the picture. The majority of critics praised Kravitz as a "director to watch," and the film received a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film's potential for longevity has been voiced by Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
Dergarabedian told Urban Hollywood 411 on Sunday that the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend will give Blink Twice a chance to capitalize on the extended holiday moviegoing frame in its second weekend, which is good news for the well-marketed film.
"Legendary talent, a strong trailer, and positive word of mouth could continue into this week and give the show a boost," he said.
This past weekend, faith-based drama The Forge followed Blink Twice on the charts with an estimated $6.6 million in its premiere.
The Kendrick brothers, Alex and Stephen, are behind the Sony Pictures release. They were most famous for their 2015 smash hit War Room.
An absent father figures play a crucial role in the drama as it follows a young man as he grows into manhood and the influence of a male mentor.
Priscilla Shirer is one of the actors With Cameron Arnett, Karen Abercrombie, T.C. Stallings, BJ Arnett, Ken Bevel, Jonathan Evans, Jerry Shirer, Tommy Woodard, and Aspen Kennedy; former NFL standout Benjamin Watson also makes an appearance.
The drama made a respectable $3,630 on average per theater during its run in 1,818 venues.
With a debut total of only $4.6 million, The Crow was unable to even crack the top five. Unless some sort of miraculous intervention occurs, the picture will go bankrupt despite having a rumored $50 million production budget.
In the contemporary remake of James O'Barr's original graphic novel, Bill Skarsgård plays the legendary part of The Crow. Also starring in Rupert Sanders's gothic superhero flick are FKA twigs.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the thriller a 20 percent score, indicating that critics thought it was bad. Critics have said that The Crow has "weak pacing" and "lacks any visual flair."
