Prayers Up: Mariah Carey Reveals Her Mother Patricia and Sister Alison Died on the Same Day
Mariah Carey's mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, died on the same day over the weekend, PEOPLE confirms.
"My heart is devastated since I lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister passed away on the same day," the Grammy-winning singer, 55, told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement.
"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," she says. "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
There are currently no more data available, including Patricia and Alison's causes of death.
Patricia, who was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and voice instructor before the pair had children Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. The parents divorced when the "Hero" singer was three years old.
Mariah's connection with her mother, from whom she acquired her singing abilities, was tumultuous throughout her life.

"Like many areas of my life, my relationship with my mother has been fraught with paradoxes and competing truths. "It's never been all black and white; it's been a whole rainbow of emotions," she writes in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
"Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment," Mariah writes in her book. "A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."
Despite their ups and downs, Mariah remained close to her mother. In 2010, they appeared together on ABC's Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special, performing a joyous mother-daughter duet of "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus."
Mariah also devoted part of her memoir to Patricia. "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could," wrote her. "I will love you the best I can, always."
Mariah's connection with Alison was equally difficult. In her memoir, the actress stated that it was "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact" with her or Morgan.
