Introducing Dr. Brunson
Last week Quinta Brunson returned home to Philadelphia, PA. She gave the commencement speech at Temple University she was awarded an honory doctorate by her alma mater.Brunson was an advertising major at Temple who skipped class to hang out at the Student Activities Center and perform with the school’s student-run sketch comedy troupe. She dropped out during her sophomore year to move to Los Angeles.Brunson who not only the creator but writer, producer and actor of the hit show Abbott Elementary but a West Philadelphia, native shared this with the students. First acknowledging her mother by saying.
“Mom, it only took me 11 years, two Emmys, and one Golden Globe to finally get a degree. I told you I would do it,” Brunson said.
“My Owls have always been with me, and I hope you keep your Owls with you. These relationships are really precious.”
Brunson also advised the crowd to "remember their people" as they join the "cold, hard" real world, where compassion and generosity will be just as crucial as their street smarts honed in North Philadelphia.
When it comes to what Temple's Class of 2024 will do after graduation, Brunson believes they will land first in her DMs.
Brunson encouraged the audience to message her Instagram if they ever found themselves in Los Angeles.
“I might see it,” she said, “and I’ll give you a tour of the Warner Bros. lot.”
