Tyler Perry isn’t backing down
Tyler Perry is responding to unfavorable reviews of his latest film, Divorce in the Black.
Perry stated on the July 23 episode of Keke Palmer's podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, that he is unmoved by the criticism.
“I’m like great, have your opinion,” Perry shared. “I live from this seat, tempered, measured, patient, prayerful, and disciplined… I step back, I count, I watch, I see which way I need to move; I don’t rush into comments.”
Perry's latest film has proven a smash with moviegoers, debuting at number one on Prime Video's US movie list.
However, critics have been less impressed, with the thriller garnering a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“You got to drown all of that out,” Perry emphasized. “If you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell. I know for a fact that what I’m doing is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.”
The director, writer, actor, and producer, best known for his Madea franchise, said he is still committed to telling tales that resonate with his audience, citing innumerable emails from fans expressing how his work reflects their life.
“Don’t discount these people and say that their story doesn’t matter. Who are you to be able to say which Black story is important or should be told. Get out of here with that bulls–t,” he continued.
While critics may not agree, Divorce in the Black has a 75 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
