Normani's journey to success has been a gradual one, starting with her beginnings as a pivotal member of the popular girl group Fifth Harmony. Inaugurated in 2012, the band debuted two albums before bandmate Camila Cabello departed in December 2016. Normani stayed on board and played a significant role in the creation of the quartet's third and ultimate self-titled album, which was released in 2017. The next year brought a new chapter for Fifth Harmony, as the group dissolved to allow each member to pursue their individual careers.
Normani's journey as a solo artist has been marked by multiple pauses and restarts in the years that followed. She was the trailblazing artist chosen to be the inaugural signing for Keep Cool/RCA Records, with eager anticipation building for the release of her solo album. However, instead of releasing a full album, Normani decided to sprinkle singles throughout, such as the chart-topping "Dancing With a Stranger" featuring Sam Smith and "Love Lies" collaborating with Khalid. Her collaboration with Cardi B on "Wild Side" reached a respectable position on the charts, demonstrating her moderate level of success in the music industry. Ranking at 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her solo hit "Motivation" breaking into the top 40.
In 2022, Normani hinted that her first ever album could be on the horizon by revealing she had secured a global publishing deal with Hipgnosis Songs Group and confirming that she was busy creating new music. In May 2023, she parted ways with manager Brandon Silverstein from S10 Entertainment. Shortly after, she signed a fresh management agreement with Brandon Creed and Lydia Asrat, who together guide the paths of Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, and Coco Jones.
