First Look “The Naked Gun” Reboot
Liam Neeson is venturing into comedy with the forthcoming sequel/reboot The Naked Gun. The picture was included during Paramount's recent CinemaCon presentation. Here's everything we know: Neeson debuts in Naked Gun as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen's original character from The Naked Gun.
The film also features Pamela Anderson, CCH Pounder, Paul Walter Hauser, Cody Rhodes, Kevin Durand, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu and Danny Huston. Busta Rhymes also appears in the film as a suspect. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Neeson tells Busta’s character, “It says you’ve served 20 years for man’s laughter. Must have been quite the joke.”
The film's production crew includes Seth MacFarlane, whose trademark fourth-wall-breaking comedy is on full show in the teaser, including a joke about O.J. Simpson, who featured in the original film. Other producers include Erica Huggins, as well as executive producers Akiva Schaffer (who also directed and co-wrote the picture with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand), Daniel M. Stillman, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary.
The film relies heavily on parody and meta-humor, with references to Neeson's previous roles as an assassin-for-hire or shady detective who uses their deadly skills for good—think Taken, Non-Stop, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Run All Night, The Commuter, In the Land of Saints and Sinners, and more.
The official description mocks Neeson's career, stating, "Only one man has the particular set of skills…to lead Police Squad and save the world!"
Neeson previously played an uncredited role in MacFarlane's Star Trek parody The Orville, so he is familiar with the comedian's style. Their previous partnership could have influenced Neeson's casting.
The film will hit theaters August 1st,
