Different World Spinoff in the Works
Hillman College classes could resume shortly in a sequel to A Different World.
Netflix is creating a sequel to the popular 1980s sitcom, Variety reported on Wednesday, August 7.
The possible sitcom would follow the youngest daughter of Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), who is currently a student at Hillman, a fictional HBCU.
The sequel was written by Felicia Pride (Grey's Anatomy, Queen Sugar).
The creative team also includes Debbie Allen, producer and director of A Different World, Tom Werner, producer of the original program, and writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood. They've all been named executive producers for the sequel, alongside Pride and Mandy Summers.
The original comedy aired on NBC for six seasons from 1987 to 1993 and was a spinoff of The Cosby Show.
The spinoff featured Lisa Bonet, reprising her role as Denise Huxtable from The Cosby Show, as she left for college. Bonet exited the series following the first season.
The ensemble cast included Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Marisa Tomei, Dawnn Lewis, Sinbad, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Glynn Turman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mary Alice, and Lou Myers.
