Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' tops the box office with a massive $110 million debut
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice did extremely well in theaters this weekend. The supernatural horror fantasy dominated the box office with a stunning domestic launch of $110 million.
According to Comscore, Tim Burton's film had the second best September opening of all time. The only picture to open higher in September was It in 2017, which grossed $123.4 million.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was shown in 4,575 theaters, netting a staggering $24,044. Outside of North America, the film grossed $35.4 million, resulting in a global debut of $145.5 million.
The Warner Bros. release is a sequel to Burton's 1988 horror comedy Beetlejuice. Both films feature Michael Keaton as a ghost attempting to marry someone in the physical world, and Winona Ryder as his love interest.
The new drama is around an unforeseen family tragedy in which three generations of the Deetz family reunite to Winter River.
In addition to Keaton and Ryder, the film stars Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Catherine O'Hara, Justin Theroux, and Willem Dafoe.
Critics awarded the picture positive reviews with a 77 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, with the consensus saying the franchise "still has plenty of juice left in this madcap return to form for Tim Burton."
Moviegoers loved what they saw, giving the film a "B+" CinemaScore.
Deadpool & Wolverine fell to second place this weekend, with $7.2 million from Friday to Sunday.
Reagan, a biopic about the country's 40th president, finished third with $5.2 million.
Alien: Romulus ranked fourth with $3.9 million in its fourth weekend. It Ends with Us finished out the top five, grossing $3.7 million in its fifth week.
